ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jikka Defiño is a Filipina visual artist exploring interpretations of "home”, rooted in the philosophy that home may be a place, a memory, or a mental escape. Her internationally exhibited work, featured in the Philippines, USA, Italy and Thailand, employs textured strokes rendering familiar spaces.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Jikka Defiño’s practice in visual arts centers on exploring interpretations of “home” whether through whimsical places or familiar spaces.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Jikka proudly embraced art as a hobby alongside her many creative and academic pursuits growing up. Her innate artistic talent was quickly recognized, leading her to win several art competitions from an early age. However, in a society that traditionally puts a premium on established fields like law, medicine, and business, she was initially urged to pursue a different, though related, professional path in media. Despite this early divergence, Jikka remained sure of her artistic vocation. To her, art always felt like home, a reliable sanctuary she could turn to after a long day.

In 2021, Jikka turned her practice toward textured abstraction, using gestural strokes in bright and vivid colors to capture and convey a resonant sense of hope amidst the global pandemic. She continued to create as a passion while navigating her career in non-profit and later in the corporate sector.

By 2024, recognizing the strength of her work, she made a decisive move to professionalize her practice, successfully partnering with corporations and seeking gallery representation, thus beginning her formal foray into the arts business.

Everyone has a concept of home: a whimsical escape, a living space, or an experience. i create to explore what resonates with different people.

INTENSIFICATION OF PRACTICE

Jikka’s commitment to creating art as an expressive passion was intensely amplified by a personal health crisis. In March 2025, she received a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease (kidney failure). While physically preparing for a transplant, she sought profound emotional and mental refuge through her art. Undeterred, Jikka continued to work with galleries, and by July of the same year, she had successfully showcased her art in New York and received invitations from curators to exhibit in Rome.

In July 2025, Jikka was accepted into the fifth batch of Art Show Philippines’ Mentoring Program. This period of focused training prompted her to revisit her art process, experimenting intensively with forms, landscapes, and color palettes until she found a theme that most resonated with her intensified search for stability: home. This has since become the defining motif of her celebrated impasto work.

ART STYLE & RECOGNITION

Jikka translates her introspection onto the surface using short gestural strokes in flat, vibrant colors, constructing solitary houses in whimsical landscapes or intimate, recognizable spaces.

These works serve as a powerful invitation, prompting viewers to reflect on their own definitions of sanctuary, permanence, and the spaces that define their sense of self.

Jikka's work has been featured in group exhibitions across the Philippines (1159 Creative Space, Luneta Art Fair, Art Show Philippines), the USA (A.I.R. Gallery), Italy (Rome Art Week), and Thailand (hechyeomoyeo).

Adding to her growing profile, she has also collaborated with top Philippine real estate companies, showcasing a different artistic style—large-scale abstractions—in high-profile building lobbies, successfully merging fine art with architectural space.
